Is DisplayPort Better for Gaming? | LINDY Australia

Is DisplayPort Better for Gaming?

First releasing in around 2008, DisplayPort is one of the newer cable formats used for transmitting high-definition video and audio signals between a video source and display. For the most part, DisplayPort has always been a step ahead in terms of capabilities versus it’s main competitor HDMI however it is still frequently debated as to which connection is better for gaming. To answer this question, you will first need to take a look at the devices you need to connect then work out what exactly it is you need the cable to do.

Is DisplayPort Better for PC Gaming?

Physically similar to HDMI, DisplayPort is a connector far more likely to be seen on PC’s and monitors than TV’s especially when it comes to gaming. Depending on your graphics processor and monitor, DisplayPort has the potential to deliver superior graphics and gameplay. Over time there have been several improvements to the DisplayPort standard, the following of which you may find in your equipment:

DisplayPort 1.2: Supports 3840 x 2160 @ 60Hz, 1920x 1080 @ 240Hz, (Some FreeSync Support)
DisplayPort 1.4: Supports 7680 x 4320 @ 60Hz with HDR, 3840 x 2160 @ 120Hz
DisplayPort 2.0: Supports 15360 x 8640 (16K) @ 60Hz with HDR, [email protected] without HDR

There are also a few other beneficial features putting DisplayPort a step head of the competition. AMD FreeSync as well as Nvidia G-sync are supported by DisplayPort, offering tear-free gaming regardless of which brand GPU you use providing your display supports it.

A feature known as MST (Multi Stream Transport) is also exclusively available with DisplayPort, allowing up to 4 displays to run from a single DisplayPort connection creating an extended workspace for work or play.

Another useful attribute is that most DisplayPort connectors feature a locking retention mechanism which ensures a secure connection between the cable and your devices, minimising the risk of connectivity issues.

Is DisplayPort Good for Gaming Consoles?

Unfortunately, all the latest gaming consoles like the Xbox Series X or S, PlayStation 5 (PS5), and Nintendo Switch do not include DisplayPort connectivity. With the use of converting cables or dongles it is possible to convert this signal from your consoles to be used on a DisplayPort monitor, which can sometimes open up the possibility of greater resolutions or refresh rates than your television may be capable of.

Should I Use DisplayPort or HDMI?

Both DisplayPort and HDMI have their place in the AV world, and your choice will ultimately depend on your application. Connecting your gaming console to your TV, 9 times out of 10, will require an HDMI connection. On the other hand, if you’re trying to connect your new high end gaming PC to a 144Hz display, DisplayPort is a no brainer.

The best cable is going to be whatever suits your setup. The most important thing is to check your source and display before making your purchase so that you are able to select the best cable to optimise your requirements.

When Should I Upgrade My HDMI Cables?

A good quality HDMI cable is pretty durable, so it is fairly common for people to still be using HDMI cables that are close to a decade old as there isn’t always an incentive to replace or upgrade something that still works. As technology advances, so do the specifications and supported features of the humble HDMI cable, so although your current cable may appear to be working fine, you could be missing out on a lot of the benefits that come with new HDMI standards. This doesn’t necessarily mean your HDMI cables need to be upgraded often, but there are definitely perks to upgrading your HDMI cables every now and then.

When Purchasing New Equipment

If your television, monitor, computer, or gaming console stop working and can’t be repaired, naturally you would replace them. These devices however are often periodically replaced out of a desire to obtain better performance, picture quality, or updated features. Upgrading your entertainment devices is also the perfect opportunity to update your cables. Not only will this provide a slew of new features only supported by newer HDMI cables but is a fantastic opportunity to tidy up that tangled mess of cables hiding in your desks, drawers, and cupboards

When They Stop Working

As durable as they are, HDMI cables can unfortunately stop working without warning. You may find your display starts presenting some bizarre colours or a blank screen despite ensuring the cable is connected properly. Alternatively, your pet may have decided your cables make a great chew toy, or they could have been bent a little too far beyond their radius. Whatever the case may be, a faulty cable will need to be replaced, so why not choose a quality replacement cable that will serve you well into the future!

When You Rearrange Your Office or Entertainment Space

Moving house can be stressful enough without having to keep track of which HDMI cable pairs to each device. Rearranging your entertainment space can be the perfect opportunity to swap out those outdated cables that are often neglected due to the lack of accessibility and replace them with new cables that not only fit the application but perform better at the same time.

How Do I Choose a Charging Station?

The number of digital devices now available mean that your typical household has much more than one or two smartphones to charge. Tablets, laptops, e-book readers, and smartwatches all need to be charged regularly. And depending on how many of these devices you and your family own, keeping them charged can be tricky, if not messy. Misplaced chargers and USB cables are a common problem, but even if you create a dedicated space to charge all your devices, you still end up with multiple chargers crowding a single power strip.

Charging stations are a better solution, but it is important to know what to look for before choosing a charging station for your home or office.

Number of Ports

The number of ports included should be at the top of the list of things you look at when choosing a charging station. You’ll find charging stations with anything from two to ten ports. While the idea of being able to charge up to ten devices at once is appealing, you should still be guided by how many devices you expect or want to charge at once.

Charging stations usually provide between 1A and 2.4A of power per port. This is an important feature to look at. 1A is sufficient for most smartphones, but bigger devices–such as tablets–will charge faster with 2A, 2.1A, or 2.4A. The best charging stations have all ports supporting 2.4A but automatically detect the optimum amount of power needed for each connected device.

USB Connector Types

With so many different devices available, it is important to ensure you have the correct cables to suit. For years, USB Micro-B and USB Mini-B alongside Apple’s Lightning connector were the primary connector types. As technology advances so do the cables required with nearly all modern devices migrating to the USB-C connector to facilitate super fast charging speeds and increased data transfer rates.

Most charging stations will exclusively feature USB-A ports as this is the most common connection, however there are more and more charging stations starting to utilise a mix of both USB-A and USB-C as demand for the combination increases.

Portability of the charging station isn’t a big concern for many people. Charging stations that support up to ten devices aren’t as portable as those that only support up to four devices. But this shouldn’t be an issue for anyone wanting a charging station only for home use. But if you have two to four devices that you use frequently at home and at work, you might want a more compact charging station that you can easily travel with. And if you frequently travel overseas, charging stations that come with multi-country adapters or power cables can prove to be more versatile.

Now that you know what the most important features of charging stations are, you’ll find it easier to avoid focusing on how the charging station looks. Allowing you to choose a charging station that meets all your needs, instead of choosing one that looks great but takes much longer to charge all your devices.
